One has a feeling, looking back on Jerry Gray’s career in popular music, that he never quite achieved the fame his rich talent deserved. His wonderful legacy of work for Shaw and Miller has given him a position among the all-time arranging elite but somehow it is those arrangements and many original compositions that have become more famous than the man who penned them. Leading his own orchestra, Jerry never attained the world-wide acclaim that attended some of his contemporaries; perhaps it was that natural reluctance of his to be a bandleader that prevented greater recognition.
