Question 1

What does VESA compatibility mean for POS accessories, and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

VESA compatibility refers to the standardised grid of mounting holes on the back of a POS display or terminal — typically 75×75mm or 100×100mm spacing. It matters because a mount or arm designed for one VESA pattern will not physically attach to a different one, even if the hole sizes look similar. Always check your terminal's VESA specification before purchasing any mounting accessory. If your terminal and mount use different standards, a converter plate (such as the SpacePole VESA 75–100) can bridge the gap without requiring a full hardware replacement.

Question 2

Is a swingarm worth the extra cost over a fixed mount?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if your checkout involves customer-facing interactions — card payments, PIN entry, or signature capture. A 200mm swingarm allows the terminal to rotate smoothly between staff and customer without being lifted or repositioned manually, which reduces wear on both the mount and the terminal over time. For a back-office terminal or a single-operator till where the screen never needs to face a customer, a fixed mount is perfectly adequate and meaningfully cheaper. The DuraTilt® mechanism on SpacePole swingarms is particularly well-regarded for maintaining position without drift during busy periods.

Question 3

Can I use a universal VESA mount with an Elo Touch terminal?

Accepted Answer

Not always. Some Elo Touch terminals use standard VESA patterns and will accept universal mounts, but others use proprietary mounting interfaces that require Elo-specific accessories. Check the product datasheet for your specific Elo model before purchasing a third-party mount. Elo Touch Solutions accessories are priced at a premium — averaging around 98 £ across their range — but they guarantee compatibility and are engineered to the same load and durability standards as the terminals themselves.

Question 4

What's the risk of buying the cheapest POS mount available?

Accepted Answer

The main risk is load capacity failure over time. Budget mounts often lack precise load ratings, and a terminal that weighs 6–8kg with cables attached will gradually cause a under-rated mount to sag, loosen, or fail — potentially dropping expensive hardware. At the lower end of the price range (around 19 £ to 32 £), you're looking at protective cases and basic adapters, not structural mounts. For anything that needs to physically support a terminal, spending up to 59 £ on a properly rated SpacePole or Elo Touch mount is a straightforward risk-reduction decision.

Question 5

Do POS protective cases interfere with terminal functionality?

Accepted Answer

A well-designed case should not interfere with normal operation. Transparent polycarbonate cases — like those from Mobilis — are specifically designed to allow visibility of status lights and touchscreen access without removing the device. The main trade-off is heat dissipation: a fully enclosed hard case can cause some terminals to run warmer during extended use. For payment terminals used in short bursts this is rarely an issue; for always-on kiosk deployments, check the manufacturer's thermal specifications before enclosing the device.

Question 6

How do I know if a SpacePole accessory will fit my existing pole setup?

Accepted Answer

SpacePole accessories are designed around a modular system, but pole diameter and thread compatibility still need to match. Standard SpacePole poles use specific diameter and thread specifications — check whether your existing pole is 25mm, 28mm, or 32mm diameter, and verify the thread pitch (M8 or M10 are most common). Ergonomic Solutions publish compatibility guides for their SpacePole range, and most UK distributors can advise on fitment. Buying a swingarm or adapter without confirming pole compatibility is the second most common purchasing mistake in this category, after VESA mismatch.

Question 7

Are POS accessories covered by UK warranty, and what should I expect?

Accepted Answer

Most branded POS accessories sold in the UK come with a minimum one-year manufacturer warranty, with Ergonomic Solutions and Elo Touch typically offering two years on structural components. Warranty coverage matters more here than in many accessory categories because these components are under constant mechanical stress in commercial environments. When comparing prices across retailers — Currys Business, Amazon.co.uk, or specialist AV distributors — check whether the warranty is registered directly with the manufacturer or through the retailer, as this affects how claims are handled if a mount fails mid-deployment.
