Question 1

How do I find the best price for InfiniBand & fibre optic cables in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Match speed, connectors and distance first, then compare like‑for‑like. Use DAC for very short, low‑latency links and AOC or discrete fibre for longer runs. Buying the correct length and polarity up front usually yields the best price.

Question 2

Are cheap (pas cher) fibre‑optic patch leads reliable?

Accepted Answer

They can be when they meet recognised standards (OS2, OM3/OM4) and offer good insertion/return‑loss. Prioritise build quality and testing to avoid downtime costs.

Question 3

Which should I use for short top‑of‑rack links: DAC or AOC?

Accepted Answer

Use DAC twinax for very short, low‑latency connections; choose AOC when you need longer reach with integrated optics.

Question 4

Single‑mode OS2 vs multimode OM3/OM4: what’s right for my deployment?

Accepted Answer

OS2 suits long distances and headroom; OM3/OM4 fits short‑to‑medium links with cost‑effective transceivers. Keep paths distinct to avoid mismatches.

Question 5

What connectors and formats do I need for 100G links?

Accepted Answer

QSFP28 with DAC/AOC or optical breakouts, plus LC duplex or MPO/MTP for parallel optics. Verify polarity and pinout with device documentation.

Question 6

How do I size cable length to minimise latency and clutter?

Accepted Answer

Measure the route including management slack and choose the shortest compliant length. Plan paths to maintain airflow and ease troubleshooting.

Question 7

Can these cables be used outdoors or in riser/plenum spaces?

Accepted Answer

Only if the jacket is rated for those environments (e.g., LSZH, outdoor UV‑resistant). Follow UK building regulations and installation standards.
