Question 1

Which HDMI cable do I need for 4K 120Hz or 8K?

Accepted Answer

Choose an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable (often associated with HDMI 2.1). It supports the bandwidth required for 4K at 120Hz and 8K at 60Hz, plus gaming features like VRR and ALLM. For 4K at 60Hz, a High Speed HDMI cable (HDMI 2.0 era) is usually sufficient.

Question 2

Are cheap HDMI cables reliable, and how do I get the best price in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Yes—if the cable meets the correct spec and is certified. Picture quality will not improve beyond that, so focus on the right spec, length, build and warranty. To get the best price in the UK, avoid over-length runs, buy only the features you need (for example eARC), and look for certification labels rather than luxury finishes.

Question 3

Do I need an 8K HDMI cable for a 4K TV?

Accepted Answer

No. A High Speed HDMI cable is typically fine for 4K at 60Hz. If you want 4K at 120Hz, future-proofing, or eARC robustness, step up to an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.

Question 4

What’s the difference between High Speed (HDMI 2.0) and Ultra High Speed (HDMI 2.1) cables?

Accepted Answer

Ultra High Speed supports higher bandwidth and features such as 4K at 120Hz, 8K, VRR and often improved eARC stability. High Speed suits 4K at 60Hz streaming and movies, while Ultra High Speed is best for high-frame-rate gaming and premium setups.

Question 5

Which HDMI cable should I use for ARC/eARC soundbars?

Accepted Answer

For ARC, a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet usually works. For eARC and top-tier audio formats, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is recommended for better robustness.

Question 6

How long can an HDMI cable be without losing signal?

Accepted Answer

Runs up to about 3–5 metres are typically straightforward for passive cables. For longer distances or higher bandwidth needs (such as 4K 120Hz), consider high-quality passive, active or fibre HDMI solutions to maintain stability.

Question 7

Is HDMI or DisplayPort better for high-refresh gaming monitors?

Accepted Answer

Many PC monitors favour DisplayPort for very high refresh rates, while HDMI 2.1 handles 4K at 120Hz on modern TVs and some monitors. Check your display and GPU specifications to choose the best interface for your use case.
