Product Information
Following the success of the first volume of Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey the Stones' former bassman presents a further selection of his favourite blues recordings, this time from the saucy side of town and country. The 40 tracks on this double CD are some of the steamiest pre-war blues originally committed to shellac. Often referred to coyly as "risque" blues this genre of recording was a virulent form of across the tracks entertainment when even so much as dancing the Black Bottom could get you drummed out of white society. It is not certain whether many of the writer/performers (as often as not salacious women as rampant men) would have recognised the term 'double-entendre' but they were masters and mistresses of the art nonetheless. As annotator Neil Slaven points out, anything was grist to the mill: creatures of the field, the sea, the air, objects of all shapes and sizes, ovens, stoves, right down to cigarettes and the odd lubricious lollypop. Tradesmen like electricians, butchers and elevator men, all could ply their skill, bringing their appliances with them. All delivered with huge helpings of wit and good humour. A joy to listen to throughout, not only for the lyrics but also the splendid vocal and musical performances, as fine as any other blues recordings of the era.
