At the start of the Fifties Miles Davis’ career had hit a barrier which, for a period of time, seemed insurmountable, but by mid-decade, with his substance-abuse troubles behind him, he had established himself as one of the major artists on the modern jazz scene. Featured here is his biggest and most famous album, ‘Kind Of Blue’ – a real jazz masterpiece – as well as two bonus albums, ‘Ascenseur pour l’échafaud’ and ‘Somethin’ Else’ with Cannonball Adderley. This is five-star stuff that should be in all modernists’ collections. The listener should be in no doubt that this is some of the most essential music of the Twentieth Century.
