Question 1

Which networking cable should I choose: Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6a?

Accepted Answer

Match the cable to your required speed and environment. Cat5e suits budget Gigabit links; Cat6 adds better noise performance and headroom; Cat6a is recommended for dependable 10Gb and more demanding runs. For most UK home offices, Cat6 is a sensible balance of performance and price.

Question 2

Does cable length affect speed and reliability?

Accepted Answer

Yes—longer runs can reduce signal margin. Keep patch leads as short as practical and follow structured cabling limits (with compliant terminations) for best results. For very long or noisy runs, step up to Cat6a or consider fibre.

Question 3

Do I need shielded (STP/FTP) or unshielded (UTP) Ethernet cable?

Accepted Answer

Use shielded cable near sources of interference and when running alongside mains for extended distances. In typical domestic or office installs with proper separation, UTP is usually sufficient and more cost‑effective.

Question 4

Are flat Ethernet cables good for Gigabit or 10Gb?

Accepted Answer

Flat designs are convenient but can be more susceptible to noise and bending stress. For maximum performance and durability, choose round cables that maintain consistent twist and pair separation—especially at 10Gb.

Question 5

Will a more expensive cable make my internet faster?

Accepted Answer

Speed is limited by your broadband line and network hardware. Paying more only helps if you step up to the correct cable category or construction for your needs; otherwise there’s no benefit.

Question 6

How can I find networking cables at the best price (meilleur prix) or cheap (pas cher) in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Decide on the minimum category and length you need, then look for certified, standards‑compliant leads. Avoid overspec, buy multi‑packs when practical, and prioritise value and compliance over marketing extras.

Question 7

When should I use fibre instead of copper Ethernet?

Accepted Answer

Use fibre for very long runs, electrically noisy areas, or when you need high bandwidth with isolation between buildings. Pair cables with appropriate adapters and connectors for a complete optical link.
